Billy Butterfield (
January 14 ,1917 inMiddleton, Ohio –March 18 ,1988 ) was a jazztrumpeter ,flugelhornist andcornetist .He studied cornet with Frank Simons, but later switched to studying medicine. He did not give up on music and quit medicine after finding success as a trumpeter. Early in his career he played in the band of
Austin Wylie . He gained attention working withBob Crosby and later worked withArtie Shaw . Between 1943 and 1947 he led his own band, which in 1943, recorded thejazz standard "Moonlight in Vermont", featuringMargaret Whiting . He was a member of the World's Greatest Jazz Band led byYank Lawson andBob Haggart from the 1960s till his death in 1988. He freelanced as guest star with many bands all over the world. In addition he was performing as part of the many Jazz festivals including the Manassas Jazz Festival and Dick Gibsons Bash in Colorado.External links
