Brickwood Galuteria

Brickwood Galuteria

Brickwood Galuteria, actor, singer, performer, radio personality, advocate of the Hawaiian sovereignty movement and chairman of the Democratic Party of Hawai'i. As chairman in 2004 to 2006, he is charged with preparing Hawai'i Democrats to fend off the election of Republicans to the Hawai'i State Legislature and the retaking of the Office of Governor of Hawai'i from incumbent Linda Lingle, a position held by Democrats for 40 years prior to 2002.

Early Years

Galuteria was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai'i. He attended Kamehameha Schools where he graduated from high school in 1973. He first broke into his radio and television career in 1979. He starred in several local stage and television productions for which he won acclaim from the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin newspapers.

According to his criminal transcript, Brickwood's street names are "Brick" and "Buzzy". He has 2 DUIs and beat the rap on a third DUI on the Big Island. It is not clear whether the nickname "Buzzy G" is related to his alcohol consumption. A third conviction is for criminal contempt of court.

Entertainer

In 1994, he became the second half of the "Aloha Morning Show" joining local entertainer Frank B. Shaner on KINE FM. In 2004, Shaner was removed abruptly from the show by Atlanta-based Cox Radio Incorporated and Galuteria became the solo host of the highly rated morning drive time radio program.

For years local residents and tourists knew him as the voice of TheBus, as the City & County of Honolulu used his voice talents for pre-recorded destination and landmark announcements aboard the city's national award-winning public transportation system.

Democratic Party Chairman

Upon his election to become party chairman on May 30, 2004, Galuteria quickly stated his intent of reforming the party to reflect the circumstances that led to the election of Lingle. While members appreciate those who pioneered the party, Galuteria said, "we're also regretful that we missed some opportunities in the past few years and we admit the fact that we've made some mistakes. What we obviously understand is we lost our base, so we're going to try and galvanize our base. They're out there. Maybe they just don't trust the party right now, but we want to reframe it and give them something to come back to."

Galuteria has resigned as State Democratic Chair and is now seeking a State Senate seat. According to HawaiiReporter.com Galuteria in September, 2008 told Local 5 hotel workers that he was "a back door candidate who can get things done through the back door….”
