Go U Northwestern

Go U Northwestern

The "Go U Northwestern" is one of the fight songs of Northwestern University. It was written in 1912 by Theodore Van Etten, a member of the Northwestern University Wildcat Marching Band at the time. It debuted November 23, 1912, at old Northwestern Field in Northwestern's football season-finale versus the Illinois Fighting Illini.

The song, along with Northwestern's other fight song, "Rise, Northwestern!" (commonly called the "Push On Song" or simply "Push On!"), and the university's alma mater, "University Hymn" (sometimes "Quæcumque Sunt Vera") are Northwestern official school songs. "Go U Northwestern" or "Rise, Northwestern!" is played by the marching band during football games every time Northwestern scores against its opponent and at various other times during the game.

Lyrics

The song consists of a chorus, followed by an instrumental interlude. There are two versions: one is call and response, whereby punctuated by a few lines of yelling, and the chorus repeated. The other is where the crowd sings the whole interlude.

:"Go U Northwestern!":"Break right through that line.":"With our colors flying,":"We will cheer you all the time,":U Rah! Rah!:"Go! U Northwestern!":"Fight for victory,":"Spread far the fame of our fair name,":"Go! Northwestern win that game."

"Interlude version 1:":(Call and response instrumental):(Yell) Go! Northwestern Go!:(Call and response instrumental):(Yell) Go! Northwestern Go!:Hit 'em hard!:Hit 'em low!:Go! Northwestern Go!

"Interlude version 2:":Varsity, Varsity, Hit 'em hard and low:Varsity, Varsity, Go Northwestern, Go.:U Rah, Rah! U Rah, Rah!:U Northwestern Rah!

(Repeat chorus)
