Jigg's dinner

Jigg's dinner

A traditional meal commonly prepared and eaten on Sundays in many regions around the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. This dish is sometimes spelled "Jiggs" or "Jigs" dinner.

The meal typically consists of a combination of pickled salt beef (or salt riblets), boiled potatoes, carrots, cabbage, turnip, turnip greens and pease pudding. Condiments sometimes include mustard pickles, pickled beets, gravy and butter.

The name "Jigg's dinner" is rumored to have originated from George McManus's popular comic strip "Bringing Up Father", as this type of meal was the favorite food of the strip's main character, Jiggs.
