James K. A. Smith (born 1970) is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at
Calvin College and a notable figure inradical orthodoxy , a postmodern Christian movement.Life
Smith was born in
Embro, Ontario and currently resides inGrand Rapids ,Michigan .Education
He completed his undergraduate studies at the
University of Waterloo and Emmaus Bible College. He earned an M.Phil. in philosophical theology at theInstitute for Christian Studies where he studied underJames Olthuis . Smith went on to receive a Ph.D. fromVillanova University where he worked with noted deconstructionistJohn D. Caputo . After teaching for a short time atLoyola Marymount University , Smith accepted his current position atCalvin College . He currently resides inGrand Rapids, Michigan .Work
Smith is a leading proponent of
radical orthodoxy . Smith's popular-level work largely aims at educating evangelicals regarding postmodernism and radical orthodoxy. WithinEvangelicalism , he is generally associated withemergent church circles and is a leading academic in such circles.Given his training in
