Avishai Dekel (born 1951) is a professor of
physics at theHebrew University of Jerusalem ,Israel , holding the Andre Aisenstadt Chair of Theoretical Physics. He is doing research inastrophysics andcosmology . Prof. Dekel got hisPh.D. from the Hebrew University in 1980, and was a research fellow atCaltech and an assistant professor atYale University before joining the faculty of the Hebrew University in 1986. He served as the Head of theRacah Institute of Physics (1997-2001) and is the Dean of theAuthority for the Community and Youth at the Hebrew University since 2005. He is the President of theIsrael Physical Society (2008-11). Prof. Dekel is a frequent visitor to the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has been awarded a Miller professorship at UC Berkeley and aBlaise Pascal International Chair of Research by Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris (2004-06).Prof. Dekel is known for his contributions to research in cosmology, especially the study of the formation of
galaxies and large-scale structure in thedark matter -dark energy dominated Universe. He is most well known for the understanding of dwarf galaxies viasupernova feedback (articles with Silk in 1986 and Woo in 2003), for the analysis of cosmic flows (articles with Bertschinger and Faber 1989-1997), and his contributions to central issues in the theory of galaxy formation (e.g. his articles with Birnboim in 2003-2008).External links
