Summerhill Primary School is a primary school in Tipton, West Midlands, England. It was formed in September 2004 on the merger of two separate schools - Princes End and Locarno, the sites of which are located at opposite ends of the Tibbington estate and were both originally part of the new school.
The Princes End site was built in 1914 by Tipton Urban District council, and until the 1980s operated as a separate infant and junior schools. There was a small infant school in Bloomfield Road which operated as an annexe to the infant school at Princes End, but it was closed and demolished in the early 1970s. Princes End was originally a three-form entry school until 1971, when nearby Wednesbury Oak Primary School opened and a large number of Princes End pupils transferred to this school.
The Locarno site was built in 1936 at around the same time as the nearby Tibbington estate, to serve what was then the largest housing estate in Tipton. Falling numbers on the rolls at both schools, which were located within a few streets of each other, led to Sandwell MBC's decision to merge Princes End and Locarno into one school in 2004.
The Princes End site remained in use for one year, providing education for special needs pupils, before the school began to operate solely from Locarno Road. Demolition work began in the autumn of 2007, and houses are set to be built on the site.
A new school building will be open for the 2008/2009 academic year, and construction of the new school on an adjacent site in Upper Church Lane began in early 2007. The old Locarno Road school will then be demolished.
