Dobbs' chosen surname was taken from the character played byHumphrey Bogart in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre".In 1979, Dobbs wrote an original screenplay entitled "Edward Ford" which garnered a great deal of praise; yet, as of 2006, it remains unproduced.
Since the 1980s Dobbs has had a number of films based on his original screenplays: "Hider in the House", "
The Hard Way ", "Kafka", and "The Limey". His best-known work is"Romancing the Stone ", which starredMichael Douglas andKathleen Turner . He also was credited as co-writer on "Dark City" and "The Score".Dobbs has spoken on DVD commentary tracks for his films "Dark City" and "
The Limey ", and (as a film historian) for the unrelated classics "The Sand Pebbles", "Von Ryan's Express ", and "Double Indemnity" (this last due to his personal friendship with the late directorBilly Wilder ).Family
