Apollo Soucek

Apollo Soucek was a United States Navy Naval Aviator, who became a test pilot in the 1920s. He set and held multiple flight records, most notably at the time in 1930, the world record altitude of 43,166 feet. He was flying a single engined Curtiss "Hawk" biplane. He also served as a Task Force Commander.

He was the first Commanding Officer of the Midway-class aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB 42). The ship was launched Apr. 29, 1945, as Coral Sea at the New York Naval Shipyard but was renamed Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 8, 1945, in honor of the 32nd President who had led the country through the war and who had died on Apr. 12, 1945.

Soucek rose to the rank of Rear Admiral and command of Carrier Division Three (March 1952 – February 1953), with his flag aboard USS "Boxer" during which time he also acted as Commander Task Force 77 during line periods. He was named as Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics (BuAer). Upon retirement, NAAS Oceana (later to be NAS Oceana) was named Apollo Soucek Field, a name that still stands today.
