Dayven is a watcherlad who wants to become a Guardian. He gets sent to the wizards to tell them what's the greatest amount of magic. Dayven refuses to and later his cousin Soren says a Guardian wants to see him. The Guardian asks what he thinks about wizards and Dayven says how much he hates them. The Guardian agrees about Dayven's opinion of wizards and asks if he wants to spy on the wizards and Dayven agrees. One of the wizards gives Dayven money to bail a wizard "Riddick" out of jail. Riddick wants Dayven to go with him to spy on the Cenzar. Once they see the stream is empty they get captured by Cenzar peasants.

As he becomes entranched in the war, Dayven comes to a discomferting realization that there is no just two sides to a battle, just as there is not just black or white. He befriends a boy on the other side of the war, and during the war, he sabotages his own side. In the end, when he sees his friend hurt, he heals him, at the cost of losing everything he had beforehand.
