Kvernberget

Kvernberget

Kvernberget (literally "Mill Cliff" or "Mill Mountain") is a barren mountain formation with a maximum elevation of 205 meters, on the "Nordlandet" island of Norwegian northwestern coastal town Kristiansund, whose Kristiansund Airport takes its name from the mountain.

For a number of years, Kvernberget and the surrounding area have been popular for hiking and simple mountaineering activities, and the summit is Kristiansund's most popular hiking destination. From the summit, much of the Nordmøre district of Møre og Romsdal county may be seen, given fair weather. A drinking water reservoir is located inside the mountain.

Kvernberget is a mountain looking like a mill, an old hand-mill. The name is old, probably thousand years old. The mountain is looking like a mill of an old form, used in the middle age, driven by hand, the same mills are used in North-Africa even today. The fishermen at their work in the sea outside the island and fishing village Grip used the mountains to find their places for fishing. They saw the mountain, look-a-like as the tool they had at home, the hand-mill for grinding corn to flour.

Another mountain, Bremsneshatten, on Averøy, got its name because it is like a (sel). The old name was "brimil" which means old male (sel), and the mountain looks like the head of a (sel) over the water.
