Nonequilibrium Gas and Plasma dynamics group
- Nonequilibrium Gas and Plasma dynamics group
A research group in the Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, run by Professor Iain Boyd. The group is active in the development and application of numerical models for the simulation of nonequilibrium gas and plasma flows.
Plasma flow research conducted by group members includes developing computer models for various types of electric propulsion devices, including Ion thrusters, Hall effect thrusters, and Pulsed plasma thrusters. Other plasma research includes modeling wall ablation from directed energy weapons and the plasma-propellant interaction in electrothermal chemical guns.
High altitude nonequilibrium flows are another major subject of research in the group, with numerous NASA contracts to study reentry aerothermodynamics for space vehicles, including the Crew Exploration Vehicle.
