- Sam Durant
Sam Durant (1961 - ) is a Los Angeles based contemporary artist who works in a variety of media.
Durant was born in Seattle, Washington and graduated from the
Massachusetts College of Art with a BFA in sculpture in 1986 and later attended theCalifornia Institute of the Arts .Durant's work often deals with the conflicts between differing classes, cultures and value systems. His work of the 90s was inspired largely by the work of
Robert Smithson , an artist well known for his interest in history andentropy .Durant participated in the 2004
Whitney Biennial and the 2003Venice Biennale .Durant is also a current faculty member of
Cal Arts .In 2006 his exhibition entitled "
Proposal for White and Indian Dead Monument Transpositions, Washington D.C " was shown at thePaula Cooper Gallery inNew York . This work derived out of a residency he was conducting at the Walker Art Center in 2002. He reproduced 30 Indian massacre monuments that are based on similarities to the massive obelisk Washington monument.Durant is a 2008 finalist for the
Hugo Boss Prize .External links
