His record at West Virginia stands at 17-27, but his real success was in Division II football. He coached the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) to a 182-49-1 record. He guided IUP to 28 post-season appearances which is a Division II coaching record. In 1991 he was the National Division II coach of the year.
