- Ephraim McDowell (
November 11 ,1771 –June 25 ,1830 ) was an American physician. He was the first to successfully remove an ovarian tumor.Ephraim McDowell was born in Rockbridge County,
Virginia . His father was a veteran of theFrench and Indian War as well as a colonel during theAmerican Revolution . After the family moved toKentucky the senior McDowell participated in the drafting of theKentucky Constitution . The young McDowell, interested in medicine, studied at theSeminary of Worley and James and attended lectures in medicine at theUniversity of Edinburgh ,Scotland , from 1793 to 1794. Although he did not receive a degree from Edinburgh, he pursued his interest inanatomy andsurgery . He settled at Danville, Kentucky, in 1795, and attained prominence as a surgeon. In June 1830 Dr. McDowell was stricken with an acute attack of violent pain, nausea, and fever. He died on June 25, most likely a victim ofappendicitis .New International Encyclopedia ]McDowell practiced
surgery and was a pioneer in abdominal surgery, performing the firstovariotomy in the United States in 1809. Jane Todd Crawford, his patient, survived this operation prior to the use ofanesthesia ,antiseptics , andantibiotics . Mrs Crawford lived 35 years after the surgery.One of his most famous patients was
James K. * In 1929, the state of Kentucky donated a bronze statue of McDowell byCharles Henry Niehaus to theU.S. Capitol 'sNational Statuary Hall Collection .
