Midway Mall is an indoor shopping center located in Elyria, Ohio approximately 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Cleveland, and the only mall located in Lorain County, Ohio. It is located on the east side of Route 57 between I-90 to the north of I-80. Midway Mall is anchored by JC Penney, Sears, Macy's, also features Best Buy which can be accessed from within the mall.

History

The mall was originally opened in 1965 with Higbee's, JCPenney, Sears, and Woolworth's . In 1990, a new food court, and a wing with May Company opened. In 1992, Higbee's became Dillard's and the May Company adopted the Kaufmann's name in 1993, before becoming Macy's in 2006. In 1994 Woolworth's closed and was later replaced with Best Buy.^{[citation needed]} After many years of ownership by the Jacobs Group of Cleveland, Midway Mall was sold to The Westfield Group in the 2001 as part of the Jacobs Group's divestitures, adopting the name Westfield Midway during Westfield's ownership. Westfield later announced in spring 2006, that the mall didn't fulfill their "strategic plan". In May 2006 the Westfield Group sold Midway Mall to Centro Properties Group,^[1] at which point it reverted to its original name Midway Mall.

Steve & Barry's closed their location in 2008 due to bankruptcy, and lackluster business^[2] Despite rumors, JCPenney does not plan to leave after opening a new store in nearby Avon, Ohio has opened.^[3]

Redevelopment

Development has been rumored by Centro and the city of Elyria. There are several retailers that have been forced to leave due to falling behind on their rent, however, making it much more difficult to make plans.^[4]
