James Jones (born in 1769 [http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=tfconner&id=I16253] in Maryland - died
January 12 ,1801 ) was an American politician and lawyer from the state of Georgia.He moved with his uncle to Georgia in 1740. Jones studied law in
Savannah, Georgia , and gained admission to the state bar and became a practicing attorney. In 1790, he also served as a first lieutenant in theGeorgia Militia .Elected to the
Georgia House of Representatives in 1796, Jones was reelected to that body through 1798, a year in which he also served on the state constitutional convention and won election as an at-large member to theUnited States House of Representatives .Jones died while still serving in that position in 1801 and was buried in the
Congressional Cemetery inWashington, D.C. .Jones County, Georgia , was named in his honor.References
