Kurenivka

Kurenivka

Kurenivka or Kurenyovka ( _uk. Куренівка; _ru. Куренёвка, translit.: "Kurenyovka") is a historical neighbourhood on the right bank of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. It is located between the neighbourhoods of Podil, Obolon, Priorka, and Syrets.

Kurenivka is known from 17th century, where Cossack camps once stood. Some historians attribute the origin of the name with these Cossack camps, with "kuren" meaning Cossack caps. [cite book | title=Touring Kyiv | author=Malikenaite, Ruta | publisher=Baltia Druk | year=2003 | id=ISBN 966-96041-3-3 | pages=] With Kiev's expansion through the centuries, Kurenivka was slowly populated. These inhabitants bought out land, and created their gardens. This had made the area more like a neighbourhood, serving Kiev with various grocery products.

In 1961, the mudslide from upper-located neighborhood hit Kurenivka, resulting in thousands of deaths.
