Carl Vinson Institute of Government

The Carl Vinson Institute of Government (CVIOG) is a a public service and outreach unit at the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, Georgia, U.S.A.

History

Originally created as the Institute of Public Affairs in 1927, the institute was later renamed the Institute for the Study of Georgia Problems. In 1953, the institute merged with the Bureau of Public Administration (created in 1943) to become the Institute of Law and Government. The name was shortened to the Institute of GOvernment in 1965. Finally, the organization was named after Carl Vinson in 1983.

The Institute moved into its current location at the Lucy Cobb Institute in 1991. It also occupies the J. W. Fanning Building in Athens. A satellite office of the institute is also located the near the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta, Georgia.
