The 184th Infantry Regiment is a combat regiment of the United States Army made up of soldiers from the California Army National Guard. Only the regiment's first battalion remains an active military unit. The battalion supports state and federal missions in the United States and at overseas locations. The first battalion's higher headquarters is the 40th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

The first battalion was most recently activated in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III in early 2005 and attached to the 3rd Infantry Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team while conducting full spectrum combat operations in central and southern Baghdad.

As of August 2008, the first battalion's Alpha and Bravo companies (with Echo company attached) were training in preparation to deploy as part of the 1st Battalion, 185th Armor Regiment with the 81st Heavy Brigade Combat Team to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 08-10. The rest of the battalion is expected to deploy with the 40th Infantry Division to Kosovo in support of Operation Joint Guardian sometime in December 2008.
