Sultan Mahmud Power Station

Sultan Mahmud Power Station or Kenyir Dam is the hydroelectric dam in Kenyir Lake, Terengganu, Malaysia. It is located 50 km southwest of Kuala Terengganu on the Terengganu River. The project is a multi-purpose hydroelectric power and flood mitigation scheme.

Power station

The power station is a hydroelectric power station, using 4 turbines of 100 MW installed capacity. Continuous power output is 165 MW. Average annual energy output is 1,600 GWh. The station is operated by Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

Kenyir Dam

Construction started 1978 and completed in 1986. The dam began operation on 1987 and was officially opened on 1988 by Almarhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah of Terengganu.

Kenyir Dam technical specifications

The permanent dam components are as follows:
*Main Dam
**Maximum height above foundation of 150m, and crest length of 800m, volume of fill is 15.20 million cubic metres.
**Crest elevation is 155m above sea level (ASL), maximum flood level is 153m, operating levels maximum 145m and minimum 120m.
**Reservoir area at 145m ASL is 370 km², and with a catchment area of 2,600 km². Starage volume is 13,600 million cubic meters.
*Power Intake Structure - x bays.
*Spillway- gated concrete weir with 140m chute and flip bucket, with capacity of 7,000 cubic meter per second.
*Power Tunnels - 4 tunnels.
*Powerhouse

**with 4 penstocks to powertrains comprising 4 turbines of 100MW each, 4 air-cooled generators of 120MVA each and 4 transformers of 120MVA each.
