The term Special camps refers to former
Nazi concentration camp s andPOW camp s inGermany , re-opened asprison camp s by theSoviet NKVD after their capture by theRed Army .Those held included people sentenced by Soviet
military tribunal s, minorNazi officials, members ofWehrwolf ,German army officers, democratic political opponents ofCommunism , people arbitrarily arrested and people arrested because of false accusations. Soviet citiziens were also sent to the camp, including Nazicollaborator s and soldiers who contractedsexually transmitted disease s in Germany. Many of the inmates werecivilian s, including women and children.Tens of thousands died while in captivity, including estimated 12,000 in the
Sachsenhausen concentration camp , wheremass grave s from the Soviet period were discovered in 1990.ee also
