Lebak Regency

Lebak Regency

Lebak Regency is a regency of Banten province, Indonesia. It has an area of 3,120 km² and a population of 1,132,899 (in 2005). Rangkasbitung is the capital of the regency.

The regency is subdivided into 28 subdistricts.

The Lebak Regency is the Regency where Eduard Douwes Dekker (Multatuli) in 1856 was appointed as assistant resident. Douwes Dekker observed that the local regent exploited the local population without mercy. He also suspected that this man had poisoned the predecessor of Douwes Dekker. Complaints of Douwes Dekker were not taken seriously however, and Douwes Dekker was deprived of his illusion that the colonial government pursued the well-being of the local population. Douwes Dekker resigned as assistant resident and later on he would write the book Max Havelaar, or the Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company.
