Mongolia and adjacent parts ofRussia . It winters in theterai ofNepal and northernIndia , in wet and dry grasslands, reeds andtamarisk s along riverbeds, and also insugarcane fields.This species has been classified as Vulnerable by
BirdLife International . The major threat appears to be the rapid loss of grasslands in its wintering area. Protected areas where it occurs in winter include Kaziranga, Corbett andManas National Park s, India, andLumbini Crane Sanctuary ,Royal Chitwan National Park andSukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve , Nepal. The current population is estimated at between 2,500 and 10,000.References
