Llanfoist

Llanfoist

Llanfoist ( _cy. Llanffwyst) is a village in Monmouthshire, Wales at gbmapping|SO287130, very near Abergavenny.

The name of the village derives from St. Fwyst, an early Christian Welsh Saint.

Attractions

The village is sited beneath the massive Blorenge Mountain, part of the Brecon Beacons National Park, rising 1,838 feet above sea level over the vale of the River Usk. The mountain can be ascended on foot from Llanfoist, straight up its 'front', a very direct route but also very steep. The rewarding views from the top are among the best in South Wales.

The Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/49209] runs just above the village offering an excellent flat route for contour walking along the valley side, with views across to the Black Mountains, Wales. Llanfoist Wharf [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/289015] is a very picturesque spot at the top of the village on a hill. The wharf is now owned by a narrowboat hire company.

Mcdonalds Nursery, Garden Centre and Florists are based in Llanfoist and have 50 years of history behind them coupled with an unpretentious and no-nonsense approach, many years of knowledge and strong links within the local community.

In Cordell Country

The novelist Alexander Cordell, most famously author of The Rape of the Fair Country is buried in Llanfoist.

Home of An Ironmaster

Llanfoist was home to a famed, or infamous, ironmaster, of the sort depicted in Cordell's books, Crawshay Bailey, who retired to Llanfoist House in 1870, a year or two before his death.

Recent History

In 2006 Llanfoist celebrated the completion of a much needed village hall which came about after a long hard struggle and many hours of hard work by a small, dedicated group of local residents who collectively as part of the Llanfoist Villagers Association (LVA for short) finally saw the fruits of their admirable efforts. In Feb 2007 a website was launched firmly putting the hall on the world wide map. See link below.

The primary school is due to move from its current location to a field alongside the canal.
