"Grew Up a Screw Up" is the second single off of Ludacris' "Release Therapy". The song features Young Jeezy, who Ludacris was previously thought to have beef with and a sample of the late The Notorious B.I.G. who sings the hook "I grew up a fucking screw up.". Curiously, in the video, Young Jeezy raps a verse different from the one which appeared on the Release Therapy Disc. The video premiered on BET's 106 & Park as a New Joint on Friday October 13 2006. The video has already been released on MTV Jams. The video features Slick Pulla and Bloodraw (from CTE). The video debuted on BET's 106 & Park 10 days (excluding weekends) after its premiere at number 9 on Wednesday October 25 2006. The video is currently in rotation on MTV2. It was produced by DJ Nasty & LVM.

ong Information

"Give Up a Screw Up" is one of the "Release" songs off the album Release Therapy, whose lead single was Money Maker. The song describes how Ludacris grew up in a bad environment. He says that he knew he had to do something in his life to be successful. The chorus samples a Notorious B.I.G. verse from Tupac's 1995 song, "Runnin' (From tha Police)" (itself sampled and released as "Runnin' (Dying to Live)" on the 2003 album "Tupac Resurrection"). Ludacris does the first and third verse. Young Jeezy does the second verse where he also raps about how he grew up and how he dropped out of school at grade 8. On the Release Therapy version, Young Jeezy raps and references songs and artists from Disturbing tha Peace, Ludacris' record label. In Jeezy's rap he makes references to Field Mob, Shawnna's "Gettin' Some", and Ludacris' "Pimpin' All Over the World".

Video

The music video's concept is not as complex as other videos featuring Ludacris. It is shot outdoors, where Ludacris and Young Jeezy rap. Behind them is a screen that shows videos and pictures of the places where they grew up. It was directed by Chaka Zulu and premiered on BET's 106 & Park on October 13, 2006.

Remix

A remix of the song has surfaced, which includes an additional verse from Young Jeezy and New Orleans rapper, Lil Wayne.
