"The Bridge" is the first single from Elton John's 2006 album "The Captain & The Kid". The single is a simple, stripped-down production focused on John and his piano, with sparse further accompaniment. The song peaked at #19 on Billboard's Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks.

ynopsis

Before playing the song at a concert in Atlantic City, New Jersey on October 7 2006, John introduced it as a song that can "apply to anyone" at any time in their lives and having to move on instead of living in the past. They either cross the bridge, die trying, or fade away.

Musical Development

The song, The Bridge, is in the key of Db, despite John adding the effect of a Gb-minor chord during the last line of the chorus. This is rare and, theoretically, incorrect but the descending effect it gives makes the last words more powerful. There is also a part of the song which breaks from the usual pattern of both the verse of chorus. In a song, this is typically called a bridge, but due to the confusion it could lead to, it is often called the interlude. The instrumental features John and his piano, working around the chord progressions of the verse, while being accompianed by some haunting harmonies, performed by the rest of the band members. John wanted the sound to be child-like and so the original recording of the harmonies has been adjusted via an EQ system (just how many semitones is unclear but one would assume that it would be an entire octave).John has admitted that is was, in fact, Bernie's idea to have the song solely piano and voice.

Covers

In 2007, the theatre company Razed Roof, used the song for their production of John Retallacks, 'A Bridge To The Stars'. The vocals were performed by Samantha Edmunds, while accompianied by piano player, Robin Burr.It was assisted by a powerful piece of physical theatre in the scene where Joel must climb the icy bridge.
