Mimura's Lair

Mimura's Lair

Mimura's Lair refers to a fictional location in the novel, manga, and film by the name of Battle Royale. It is the hideout used by Shinji Mimura.

Relevance

In all three versions, Shinji comes up with a plan to hack into the officials' computers, and infect them with a virus, as well as to blow up the school with a bomb made out of materials found on the island. In the novel and manga, he is assisted by his best friend Yutaka Seto. In the film, they are joined by Keita Iijima.

In the novel and manga, they plan to use balloons to raise a rope over the school. They would then run the bomb along the rope using a pulley device, and cut the rope once the bomb was over the school. In the film, they attach the bomb onto a truck, which they plan to drive to the school, where they will detonate the bomb.

In all three versions their plan is cut short by Kazuo Kiriyama. Their showdown takes place in Mimura's Lair in the film version, where Kazuo shows up just as they are getting ready to drive to the school. He shoots Yutaka and Keita, and injures Shinji. Shinji realizes he cannot win alone against Kazuo, and he detonates the bomb, setting the whole area on fire and killing Shinji (in the novel, the explosion is said to have been seen across the whole island as is the case with the manga). This does not kill Kazuo, but merely blinds him (whereas in the novel he escapes unscathed by taking cover in a minivan).

Shuya Nanahara, Noriko Nakagawa, and Shogo Kawada show up here just after Shinji detonates the bomb, and have a final showdown with Kazuo.

In the novel, the events of Shinji's death are slightly different, and take place in a different location.

Real Location

A video arcade in an abandoned resort hotel was used as Mimura's Lair in the film, as well as for a scene involving Mitsuko Souma and two boys.
