Villa Ludovisi

Villa Ludovisi

The Villa Ludovisi was regarded as one of the most beautiful villas of papal Rome.

Built in the seventeenth century by Domenichino on the area once occupied by the "horti sallustiani", the villa was erected by Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi. The magnificent gardens were designed by Lenotre, the architect of the gardens of Versailles.

The villa became ownership of the Boncompagni, which in 1872 rented it to King Victor Emmanuel II. The King used the villa as residence for his lover, Rosa Vercellana.

İn 1883, despite great protests among the intellectuals, the Prince Boncompagni sold the property, which was destroyed to build the new rione Ludovisi.
