Brisbane Australian Football Club
- Brisbane Australian Football Club
The Brisbane Football Club is a former football club that played by the Victorian Rules, which would later become Australian Rules Football. It was formed in May, 1866, before there was common consensus rugby football rules and so took the Victorian interpretation over the Sydney interpretation of the times. It is notable as being the first football club in Queensland.
The club competed against four teams in the area between 1868-69, including Volunteer Artillery, Brisbane Grammar School and Civil Service. The clubs played eight games in the inaugural season.
Records for the club beyond this time are scant, primarily due to absence of competition.
By 1870, a club from Ipswich, Queensland called Ipswich was the club's only competitor. Brisbane won the first three games of the season.
The senior club appeared to have folded some time during the subsequent years and was not re-formed.
Since this time, several Australian Football clubs have come to bear the Brisbane name, including "Brisbanes" in the 1920s, the Brisbane Bears in the 1980s and 1990s and more recently, the Brisbane Lions. These clubs are in no way connected with the original Brisbane Australian Football Club [ [http://www.fullpointsfooty.net/brisbane_(1).htm Brisbane ] ] .
