Safet "Pape" Sušić (born April 13, 1955 in Zavidovići) is a football coach and former player from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Football career

Sušić began his career in with the Krivaja club in Zavidovići. He was born in Rujnica, began his first soccer steps in Hajderovici. As a young man he was transferred to FK Sarajevo where he played 600 games and scored 400 goals. During the 1979/80 season he led the Yugoslavian league with 21 goals. In 1979 he was honoured as the best football player in Yugoslavia and as the best athlete of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In 1982 he was transferred to Paris Saint-Germain where he became a star on the European stage. Sušić was capped 54 times, scoring 21 goals for the Yugoslav national team, between 1977 and 1990. He transferred to Red Star Saint-Ouen that is a French club in 1991 and he retired after 1991-92 season.

He also played for Yugoslavia at the España 82, Euro 84 and Italia 90 tournaments.

In 2004, to celebrate UEFA's Jubilee, he was selected as the Golden Player of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years. [http://www.uefa.com/uefa/news/Kind=256/newsId=130150.html] "If you were to rank Safet Susic with the all time greats you would have to put him in at least the top 40," Gerd Muller (probably the greatest goal scorer in the history of soccer) said.

"It's well known how much I valued and still do value Safet Sušić. For me he's unsurpassable, the best Yugoslavia had. Probably one of the best in the world. I was often known to say that us other players should have to pay to play in the same team as Pape. At least I always talked and thought like that. Pape was a treasure for every forward. His crosses were unbelievable. Sometimes his ball would hit me without me even being aware of it. A wonderful player." - Darko Pančev [http://sportin.ba/tekst.aspx?id=9825]

Coaching career

Sušić coached AS Cannes briefly in 1994-5. He coached İstanbulspor between 1997-1999 and later Konyaspor during the 2003-4 season. He also coached Çaykur Rizespor for 12 matches in the first half of 2000-7.
