Sonia Ruseler

Sonia Ruseler (born 1963 in Buenos Aires, Argentina), anchored for CNN International from 1993 to 2001. An Argentine and Dutch national, she is currently a Senior Vice President at The McGinn Group, a strategic communications consultancy based in Washington D.C..

Early life and education

Ruseler attended St.George’s College outside Buenos Aires , and earned her B.A. (Hons.) at New Hall, Cambridge in Great Britain (1984), as well as her Masters degree (1988) in Social and Political Sciences.

Early career

Ruseler was selected to be one of the BBC elite News Trainees for its radio and television news (1986-1987). Shortly afterwards, she joined Independent Television News’ (ITN) award-winning "Channel 4 News", based in London, where she worked as producer and on-air reporter (1988-1989), covering news in Europe, including the Fall of the Berlin Wall, as well as politics in Latin America. Ruseler was appointed ITN’s Tokyo correspondent in 1991.

ITN named Ruseler to present their "Lunchtime News" on ITV, Britain’s highest-rated network in 1992. She co-presented with Nicholas Owen. Among those she interviewed was indicted war criminal Radovan Karadzic, explorer Jacques Cousteau, actress Audrey Hepburn, and opera singer Luciano Pavarotti.

CNN International

Ruseler joined Cable News Network (CNN) in 1993, to anchor "World News", including a series on Nobel Literature Laureates, Octavio Paz, Derek Walcott, Toni Morrison and Kenzaburo Oe. During breaking news, she interviewed numerous politicians and analysts, including Dr Henry Kissinger.

CNN won a CableAce award for its coverage of Russia’s 1996 election, which she anchored from Moscow.

Ruseler moved to Washington, D.C. in 1996, to present "World News from Washington" on CNN International, and CNN’s "Newsday" noon show, seen in the United States (1996-1997). She interviewed Presidents, Prime Ministers, Foreign and Defence Ministers while they visited Washington. Her last major assignment was live coverage of U.S. President George W. Bush as he was sworn in on January 20, 2001.

Personal life

Ruseler is married, with four children.

Awards

She was awarded the Advanced Certificate from the WSET (Wine & Spirits Education Trust) in 2002, achieving A with Distinction.
