Upper Canada of German ancestry, he attended Upper Canada Academy in Cobourg, Canada West in 1839, Victoria College until 1845, and received hisDoctor of Medicine degree in 1847 fromMcGill College .He was first elected to the
Canadian House of Commons representing theOntario riding ofGrenville South in the 1872 federal election. A Liberal, he was re-elected in 1874. He was summoned to theCanadian Senate in 1878 representing the senatorial division of Prescott, Ontario and sat as a Reformer until his death in 1881.References
