Cazeneuve was a French non-commissioned officer, a corporal and horse trainer of the Guard of Emperor
Napoleon III . He was a member of the first French Military Mission to Japan in 1867, in which he accompaniedJules Brunet . He worked as an instructor for cavalry in the army of theShogun , and was the first man to introducearabian horse s in Japan.With the advent of the
Boshin War , and the declaration of neutrality of foreign powers, Cazeneuve chose to resign from the French Army and continue the fight on the side of theBakufu .He participated to the
Battle of Hakodate , in which he was head of one of the four Japanese regiments. He was severely wounded in the battle, but was brought back to Yokohama at the end of the conflict and transported to France.External links
