"The Young & the Hopeless" is the fourth single taken from Good Charlotte's second studio album "The Young and the Hopeless". "The Young & the Hopeless" is also the title track for the album the song featured in. The song is about being stuck in hard times with no one to help you.

In the song, the band talks about the criticism that "critics" and "trust fund kids" gave them about what genre they were. When Good Charlotte saw them face to face, "they had nothing to say," implying that they criticise them elsewhere but not in front of the band. The line in the song goes "These critics, and these trust fund kids, try to tell me what punk is, but when I see them on the street they got nothing to say."

Trivia

*This song was used as the theme song to the Lonely Island's hit The 'Bu, a comedy TV show poking fun at The O.C.
* This is the first music video that Benji & Joel Madden had a hand in directing. It features the band in a trophy room. As they perform the song, they wreck the room and the awards in it.
* Benji Madden sings the second verse in the song. As of 2007, this is the only single the band has released where Benji sings lead instead of back-up.
