State Route 24, known here as Elm Avenue, generally marks the southern edge of the central business district of downtown Roanoke. Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital occupies much of the block between Jefferson Street and
Williamson Road . Elm Avenue then passes over the southern terminus ofInterstate 581 , which continues as the Roy L. Weber Expressway under theUS 220 designation. The exit here is a major access point to downtown. To the east, Route 24 passes through southeast Roanoke, first as Bullitt Avenue (one way-eastbound) and Jamison Avenue (one way-westbound), and then as Dale Avenue. Route 24 crosses Tinker Creek into Vinton and is a major thoroughfare in the town as Virginia Avenue, Hardy Road, and Washington Avenue. Immediately west of Vinton, Route 24 intersects the
Blue Ridge Parkway before entering Bedford County. The western part of the county around Route 24 is becoming increasingly suburban.References
