wireless data links.

This device is popular among ISPs as it provides an all in one solution (ADSL modem/router/firewall/switch), which is ideal for home broadband users.

Background

The DG834G comes in five versions, the DG834G (also referred to as the DG834Gv1), the DG834Gv2, DG834Gv3, DG834Gv4 and the DG834Gv5. The first three versions have an [http://www.linux-mips.org/wiki/AR7 TI-AR7] (MIPS32) processor and 16 MB of SDRAM and 4MB of flash memory. The DG834Gv4 has a Broadcom BCM6348 V0.7 chipset. The DG834Gv5 introduces support for Wi-Fi Protected Setup and also introduces a switch on the router to turn the Wi-Fi on and off. The router runs embedded Linux with BusyBox and Netgear's Perl-based applications.

Customisation

Whilst the router's web interface provides little scope for customisation, it is possible to place the router in a debug mode (by going to http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=debug) which allows users to connect via telnet directly to its embedded Linux system. This has led to popularity among computer enthusiasts as it provides a cheaper alternative to a full Linux router.
