December 22 ,1913 —February 4 ,2001 ) was a politician fromAlberta ,Canada .Ure ran for the first time in the Red Deer electoral district as a member for the Social Credit party in a 1954
by-election to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Ure's older brother, Minister of AgricultureDavid Ure . The younger Ure lost by 246 votes to ConservativeWilliam Cameron Kirby Hawthorn, Tom, "W.J.C. KIRBY: 1909-2003: Tory leader quit politics for bench; He failed to crack Socred grip on Alberta and instead became a fiery, no-nonsense judge," "Globe and Mail", August 21, 2003] and lost again when he contested the seat in the 1955 Alberta general election.He was elected the very next provincial election in 1959. This time he defeated Kirby, who by this time was leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, by a wide margin. He held the seat for the governing Social Credit party. He served three terms in the
Legislative Assembly of Alberta before retiring in 1971.References
