B.V. Radha is a veteran Kannada film and stage artist. Rajalakshmi by birth, Radha (Bangalore Vijaya Radha) got her screen name after her debut in Navakoti Narayana. Born in August 1948 into a family of farmers, Radha defied her family and quit school to join films.

She is married to film director K.S.L. Swame (Ravee).

Career

Proficient in a number of languages, she has acted in Kannada, Tulu, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi films. Radha is also a famous Bharatanayam dancer and has held recitals in India and abroad. She has acted with some of the biggest banners in South India like AVM Studios, ALS Productions and Padmini Pictures with artists like Sivaji Ganesan, N.T. Rama Rao, Gemini Ganesan, A. Nageshwara Rao, Jaishankar and Dr. Rajkumar. Radha has won of several awards like the Swarna Kamal (1990, for "Jamboo Savaari") and Rajath Kamal (1993, for "Harakeya Kuri") as co-producer.

Radha has also moved into the production arena and has produced five films so far. "Mathe Vasantha", "Shubha Mangala" and "Mavano Aliyano" are a few of the films produced under her banner, Radharavee Chitra.

Roles

Radha has acted in over 250 Kannada films, 30 Tamil, 25 Telugu, 10 Malayalam and a couple of Hindi films. She played mainly comic and character roles and is presently playing character roles to the younger brigade of actors. Radha is also actively involved in theatre and her troupe, Natavranda, has toured extensively throughout India. Her most famous play, "Ganga-Thunga", has held over 5,000 showings in a span of 15 years.

Social work

Radha performs marriages for the poor who cannot afford it. She has been instrumental in joining nearly 30 couples in matrimony.
