Julius Gibrilla Woobay (born May 19, 1984 in Bo, Sierra Leone) is a Sierra Leonean International footballer. He is an attacking midfielder for Universitatea Craiova in the Romanian first division and for the Leone Stars, Sierra Leone national football team. He is a regular starter for Universitatea Craiova and Sierra Leone and arguably the biggest and most famous Sierra Lenoean footballer, after Mohamed Kallon. He is simply known in Sierra Leone by his nickname Gibay. He got the nickname during his secondory school days at Bo School. In the summer of 2007, Woobay moved to top Romanian side Universitatea Craiova on a four year contract worth 3.5 million U.S dollars from Cyprus club Nea Salamis FC.

Early life

Woobay was born and raised in Sierra Leone's second largest city of Bo to parents from the Mende ethnic group. As a young star he was nicknamed Gibay by his childhood friends and fellow footballers in Bo Town. He is a graduate of the Bo Government Secondar School (commonly known as Bo School), one of the elite secondary schools in Sierra Leone.

Football career

He began his football career in his native Sierra Leone with powerhouse East End Lions in the Sierra Leone National Premier League in 2001. That same year he made his debut for the Sierra Leone national team in a 2002 Fifa World Cup qualifier against Liberia in a match played in the Liberian capital of Monrovia. He joined Cyprus first division club Nea Salamis FC in 2004 from East End Lions. In January 2007, Woobay moved to top Romanian side Universitatea Craiova on a five year contract worth 3.5 million U.S dollars from Cyprus club Nea Salamis FC.
