Taipei City , Taiwan. The historical spelling of the district is Peitou. The name originates from theKetagalan word "Kipatauw", meaningwitch . Beitou is the most mountainous and highest of Taipei's districts.Beitou is famous for its
hot springs . Residents of this district note that sulfuric fumes from the hot springs do ruin their electric appliances in the long term.History
Between 1920 and 1941, Beitou was a village (北投庄) in Shichisei-gun (Qixing District), Taihoku Prefecture (台北州七星郡). It was upgraded to a town (北投街) in 1941. After
World War II , it was renamed as Beitou urban township (北投鎮), belonging toTaipei County . Beginning in 1949, Beitou andShilin were administered by the newly-formedYangminshan Administrative Bureau . Both of them were merged intoTaipei City in 1968.Education
