Sultan Alam

Sultan Alam is a former Cleveland, England, Police Constable who was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment in 1996 for conspiracy to steal vehicle parts. He has always claimed he was innocent.

The former Cleveland police constable's allegations were taken up by the Police Complaints Authority after his release - and officers from the Northumbria Force were asked to investigate on the Authority's behalf. There then followed a lengthy and detailed investigation codnamed "Operation Granite" which began in 1999 headed by senior officers of Northumbria Police.

In June 2003, Cleveland Police confirmed that four of its officers, Detective Inspector Stephen Bakewell, ex-Detective Inspector John Russell Daglish, Detective Constable Stuart Hopson and Detective Constable Martin Eggermont, had been charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. Bakewell and Hopson were additionally charged with perjury and Eggermont was additionally charged with inciting another to steal. All four appeared at the local Magistrates' Court and were all committed for trial at the Crown Court. All four received assistance from the Police Federation.

The charges were later dismissed.

Alam then claimed costs from the Police Federation. The claim was refused and he took the case to the Employment Tribunal. Representing himself for 7 days of hearings, the Employment Tribunal delivered its decision in September 2006 finding the Police Federation of England & Wales guilty of unlawful race discrimination against him and of victimisation. This was the first such finding against the Police Federation. ( [http://www.guardian.co.uk/race/story/0,,1885402,00.html] )
