Operation
Two paper machines (PM) have a combined production capacity of 460,000 tonnes of standard and improved newsprint per year, with 420 employees. For the production of newsprint, the mill uses recovered paper (80%) and wood (20%). The recovered paper mainly comes from waste paper collected at households. The Netherlands rank among the top recycling countries in the world. From the total amount of waste paper recycling in the Netherlands (approximately 77%), Norske Skog Parenco reproduces some 16% into new paper.
The use of wood logs is being replaced with the use of wood chips—a waste product of the sawing industries—accounting for almost 80% of the wood input. The remaining 20% mainly stems from forest thinning (the removal of trees or part of trees to make room for the growth of others) in Dutch, German and Belgian production forests. Norske Skog Parenco uses wood from PEFC- or FSC- certified production forests as much as possible. Uncertified wood is always retrieved from sustainable forests.
The largest part of the annual production consists of standard newsprint, known as Nornews, in four different basis weights (from 42,5 to 52 g/m²). This product is used for cold set printing. In addition, improved newsprint grades NorX and Norbright are also procuded. Norbright has an increased whiteness, varying from 65 to 72% ISO, and can be used for both heat set as cold set printing. NorX (with whiteness varying from 59, 68 and 72% ISO) is specifically designed for heat set and flexo printing, providing a glossy look, enhanced print contrast and increased dot sharpness. These improved newsprint grades are ideal for the printing of catalogues, magazines and supplements, direct mail and other advertising media.
Norske Skog Parenco’s main markets are the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, United Kingdom and Ireland.
Economic crisis
Because of the late-2000s recession the demand for newsprint has fallen dramatically. In 2009 Norske Skog Parenco is using only one of its two paper machines. At a meeting at the Papendal Sports Center in Arnhem on 9 December 2009, 170 of the 425 employees (40 percent) received a message that they were to be laid off[1].
