Narodnye russkie skazki

Narodnye russkie skazki (Народне Русские Сказки, variously translated; English titles include Russian Fairy Tales and Russian Folk Tales), is a collection of Russian fairy tales, collected by Alexander Afanasyev and published by him between 1855 and 1863. His work was explicitly modeled after the Brothers Grimm's work, "Grimm's Fairy Tales".

While it has long been noted that many fairy tales contain no fairies, this collection contains none. Some translators have therefore tried to refer to them as "wonder tales" or other, more accurate terms, but the usual terminology has prevailed, despite its inaccuracy.

Vladimir Propp drew heavily on this collection for his analyses in his "Morphology of the Folktale".
