Narasimhan Ram (born
May 4 ,1945 ) is anIndia njournalist . He has been the Editor-in-chief of "The Hindu " since June 27, 2003. Ram also heads the other publications of The Hindu Group such as "Frontline", "The Hindu Business Line " and "Sportstar ", and has been awarded thePadma Bhushan by the Government of India.Education
Ram graduated from
Madras Christian College , Chennai in arts in1964 , went on to get a masters degree in arts fromPresidency College, Chennai in1966 and later an M.S. in comparative journalism from theColumbia University Graduate School of Journalism . Ram's contribution to journalism has been recognized by a number of awards. These include the Asian Investigative Journalist of the Year (1990) Award conferred by the Press Foundation of Asia at the "One Asia Assembly", Manila, 1990 for "the courage and diligence which inspired him and his newspaper to continue searching for the truth in the now famous
Bofors Case , the disciplined application of his journalistic idealism and the impact of his revelations on the Indian political scene"; theB.D. Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism, 1989, shared withChitra Subramaniam ; National Citizen’s Award, 1995, New Delhi, with the citation reading "for his brave and fearless writings in the interest of the nation"; andXLRI ’s FirstJRD Tata Award for Business Ethics, awarded at this management institute’s 46th Annual Convocation atJamshedpur on March 23, 2003. Ram's first wife Susan was an Irish woman who was for many years in charge of Oxford University press publications in India. As a husband and wife team, both published the first volume of a biography on R.K.Narayan, the eminent Indian writer. Their daughter Vidya Ram is a budding journalist.
