Count Stauffenberg

Count Stauffenberg

As Count Stauffenberg, several members of the Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg family are known, especially for taking part in the events of 20 July 1944.

It was Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg who planted the bomb that was meant to kill Adolf Hitler, while his elder brother Berthold Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg supported the coup in Berlin.

On the 20th July he attempted to kill the Führer by placing a bomb in his East Prussian military headquarters. Although the bomb exploded, a heavy table in between Hitler and the Bomb meant that the Führer escaped with only minor injuries to his leg. Four of Hitler's military advisors were killed in the blast. When caught by the Gestapo Count von Stauffenberg was shot and his brother Berthold was hanged with piano wire.
