Laura A. Michaelis (born in
Fort Eustis, Virginia ) is an associate professor in the department ofLinguistics and a faculty fellow in the Institute of Cognitive Science at theUniversity of Colorado at Boulder .Her research centers on the
discourse -syntax interface in conversational English and the semantic interaction between words and grammatical constructions, with particular emphasis on the linguistic encoding oftense andaspect . She has published or co-edited several books, including "Aspectual Grammar and Past-Time Reference" (1998) and "Mismatch: Form Function Override and the Architecture of Grammar" (2004), a collected volume of papers co-edited with Elaine J. Francis. Her work has appeared in the journals "Language", "Linguistics and Philosophy", "The Journal of Semantics" and "The Journal of Pragmatics". Her current research concerns the grammar of Englishnoun phrases , verbal argument structure (Goldberg 1995, 2006) and nonstandard syntactic amalgams in conversational speech. Along withCharles J. Fillmore ,Paul Kay andIvan Sag , she is currently at work on a book about the formal foundations ofConstruction Grammar .She received her BA, MA and PhD in
linguistics at theUniversity of California, Berkeley , writing her thesis under the direction ofCharles J. Fillmore .References
