Varadarajan V. Chari is an
Indian-American economist andprofessor ofeconomics at theUniversity of Minnesota .Chari received a
Bachelor of Technology inChemical Engineering from theIndian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1974, and was aproduction engineer at Union Carbide (India) Limited from 1974 to 1976.Chari received his Ph.D. from
Carnegie Mellon University in 1980 and joined theKellogg School of Management ,Northwestern University as anassistant professor ofmanagerial economics . In 1986 he moved to theFederal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis . In 1992 he returned to the Kellogg Graduate School of Management and then moved back toMinneapolis and the University of Minnesota in the fall of 1994.His research interests are in banking, fiscal and monetary policy and in issues of economic development. He has written extensively on banking crises, exchange rate fluctuations and international capital flows.
Chari is the proud father of two girls, and his wife is an avid marathoner.
Chari has an Erdős number of 4.
