Before the 2004-2005 NBA season, when the Houston Rockets and Sacramento Kings played each other twice in the "China Games", the Kings signed Liu for the pre-season. Chinese national team

Liu was a part of the Chinese national basketball teams that competed at the 2002 FIBA World Championship and the 2006 FIBA World Championship. He was also selected to compete with the Chinese national teams that competed at the 2004 Olympic Basketball Tournament in Athens and at the 2008 Olympic Basketball Tournament in Beijing.
