Born in
Sofia Popov started to play football in local club Levski. In 2005 he trained for four months withFeyenoord but did not sign with the team because he was not 18-years old. In september 2005 he returned inBulgaria and played three months for Beroe's youth team. Popov signed his first professional contract withLitex Lovech in december 2005. He made his official debut in bulgarian top division in a match againstCSKA Sofia on12 March 2006 . He played for 59 minutes. The result of the match was a 1:1 draw. On9 April 2006 he scored his first goal in professional football againstLokomotiv Sofia . He scored goal in 86th minute. The result of the match was a 3:1 win for Litex. The midfielder played 11 matches in season 2005-06 and scored 5 goals. Then he made debut and forBulgaria national under-21 football team .On the 13th of November 2007 he was linked with English Premiership side Manchester City and more recently with Blackburn Rovers.
On the 18th of September 2008, Popov scored a goal in the
